How a Solar Energy System Works. The sun is already expelling incredible amounts of energy, so why not put it to use? With the Lennox® SunSource® Energy System we offer at Davis Heating & Air Conditioning in Rocky Mount, you can decrease your dependence on oil and gas and lower your utility bills. But how does it change from sunlight to energy? The simplest way to explain a solar energy system is that the system uses solar modules made of photovoltaic (PV) cells to collect energy from the sun and convert it to electricity. This electricity will then power light, appliances and electrical devices in your home. Grid-tied PV systems Grid-tied PV systems are the most common and least expensive for residential solar systems. The SunSource Energy System we have available is grid-tied, meaning it’s connected to your utility company’s power grid or power stations. Grid-tied allows you to use your solar energy system to power your home. At times when the system isn’t generating electricity, your home will receive power through the utility grid. And, when your system produces enough to power your home and then some, it will be fed back into the grid through a process called net-metering. With net-metering, your meter spins forward if you’re using electricity from the grid and backward when you’re SunSource System’s electricity is going back into the grid. *Note: Most rebates and incentives that make a solar energy system more affordable are only available when your system is grid-tied. Stand-alone PV systems are an alternative for those in remote areas without utility service, however they’re much more expensive. A stand-alone system is not linked to a utility grid and provide for the entirety of a home’s energy consumption needs. Ready to go solar?
