Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't generating heat, a lot of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace problems are not handled, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a few warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The normal life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in an emergency. Give yourself enough time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the last two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any odd dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises around the end of their lifecycle. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home very well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies might notice increased symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
